How to Prevent Fire Incidents in Your Home

When a home fire occurs, you may only have as little as two minutes to escape. However, home fires are preventable and here are a few tips on how to prevent fire incidents at home.

Create a fire escape plan- Prepare a fire escape plan for your family and make sure everyone is familiar with it. It’s also a good idea to have an emergency communications plan so that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.

Practice! –Train all household members to know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home. Practice your home escape plan at least twice a year.

No smoking
- Institute a “no smoking” policy in the house. If someone must smoke, they should do it outside. Keep matches and lighters high and out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet.

Heater safety– Never leave portable heaters unattended. If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, nonflammable surface, like ceramic tile, not on a rug or carpet. Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

Candles
- Leaving a lit candle unattended can quickly lead to a house fire. Flammable items left near a candle can also easily catch fire. Reduce this risk by trimming the wick of your or just use battery operated candles.

Maintain and install smoke alarms - No matter where you live, always install smoke alarms on every level and multiple locations in your home. Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.

These are just a few tips to help prevent a fire incident at home. If you would like to have your home evaluated for fire safety, let Hero Fire Protection help!
