How to Minimize Your Risk for Home Fires?

Home fires are preventable and we are here to help provide a few tips on how to keep your family safe.

Be alert when cooking - If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, avoid using the oven or stovetop.
Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, boiling or broiling. Keep all flammables, like paper, clothing, bedding, drapes or rugs, at least 3 feet from the stove.

No smoking- Institute a “no smoking” policy in the house. If someone must smoke, do it outside. Keep matches and lighters high and out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet.

Heater safety– Never leave portable heaters unattended. If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, nonflammable surface, like ceramic tile, not on a rug or carpet. Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

Watch out for candles - Candles are a huge fire hazard if left unattended, especially around children. Switch to flameless candles if possible.

Fire extinguisher safety- If a fire does occur and if you’re considering using a fire extinguisher, always put your safety first. If you are not confident in your ability to use a fire extinguisher, get out of our home and call 9-1-1. If you can use a fire extinguisher, check that back is near an exit and you can use it quickly to escape. Make sure everyone has left or is leaving the home, the fire is small and not spreading and does not have a lot of smoke. Also make sure the fire department has been called.
