- Electrical Safety and Home Fires
Electronics can be a fire hazard if not maintained or used correctly. In fact, electrical malfunctions is a top cause of home fires. Here are a few tips on electrical safety to prevent home fires.
Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords.
Be sure to check your electrical cords regularly, and make sure it does not run across doorways or under carpets that can lead to damage.
Limit the number of plugs you have in an electrical outlet or power strip. Overloading an electrical outlet may not only trip a breaker, it could also start a fire.
Use extension cords for temporary wiring only. Consider having additional circuits added by a qualified electrician.
Keep light fixtures, lamps and light bulbs away from anything that can catch fire and burn, such as lamp shades, bedding, curtains, and clothing.
Call a qualified electrician if you have recurring problems such as blowing fuses or a circuit breaker tripping, discolored or warm wall outlets or flickering lights.
