Cook with Caution to Prevent Home Fires

Most kitchen fires are caused by unattended cooking. To help prevent home fires that start in the kitchen, here are a few tips you might find helpful.

  • Stay in the kitchen. It’s tempting to walk away and multitask but when cooking, frying, grilling, or broiling food, it’s safest to stay in the kitchen.
  • Turn off the stove if you must leave the room, even if it’s only for a short time.
  • If you have young children around, it’s safest to use the stove’s back burners whenever possible.
  • Keep your children (and pets) at least 3 feet away from the stove.
  • Check regularly. Be sure to check on what you are cooking, especially when simmering, boiling, baking, or roasting food. Use a timer to remind you of what is cooking.
  • Pay attention to what you are cooking. Different dishes need various preparations and cooking/baking temperatures so be sure to keep alert when in the kitchen.
